Real Madrid's contract talks with striker Cristiano Ronaldo over a new £17 million-a-year deal are understood to have be the main factor behind the stop/start Gareth Bale saga.
Informed Spanish sources have revealed to
SportsDirect News the former Manchester United winger believes that as the 'Bernabeu Number One' he should remain top earner and holder of the world record transfer fee of £96 million.Ronaldo "reacted" privately several weeks ago at the news Bale could cost the club £100 million as his own contract negotiations were going on.
That is understood to have caused Real to renegotiate with Tottenham Hotspur at around £86 million with revised terms of payment - and the problems started to arise.
With Spurs chairman Daniel Levy now playing hardball again, Real are being backed into a corner by Ronaldo's advisors who are waiting to see how things play out with Bale before deciding on their next moves.

The unfolding scenario has encouraged Manchester United to get involved although the nations bookmakers still make him a big odds on shot to join Real with United quoted at around 1/7.
