Chelsea are ready to forget Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney by launching a swap deal for Liverpool forward Luis Suarez that would see the misfiring Fernando Torres return to Anfield.
After seeing two bids for Rooney rejected by United, Chelsea were expected to table a third offer after the two sides met on Monday evening.
However the Blues now appear ready to kill the deal, having been convinced the striker plans to stay at Old Trafford.
It appears Chelsea could instead use funds set aside for Rooney to finance an ambitious move for Suarez.
The west London side were reportedly ready to pay up to £30 million for Rooney, after having bids of lower value rejected.
Adding Torres to that fee, it is anticipated, could be enough to convince Liverpool to part with Suarez.
The Anfield club have repeatedly stated Suarez is not for sale and have already turned down a £40m plus £1 bid from Arsenal for the player.
However SportsDirect News understands any proposition from Chelsea would be considered in an altogether different light.
Liverpool rejected the Gunners' bid as they consider Arsenal their closest rivals for fourth place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification.
With Chelsea one of the favourites to win the title this year, the Reds could yet be persuaded to sell Suarez to a team already considered out of sight – especially if it means they are guaranteed a top quality replacement in Torres.
