Chelsea are expected to win the race for Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto'o by offering the Cameroon international a yearly salary of £7 million.
That offer represents a significant pay cut on Eto's current deal at Anzhi, where he is paid a reported £350,000 a week.
Chelsea's offer, although modest by
comparison, is nonetheless likely to see off rival interest from Inter Milan, who have offered Eto'o a yearly wage of £4m.
The highest-paid player in world football, Eto'o currently lives in a penthouse apartment in Moscow, from where he flies to Anzhi's home games in Dagestan by private helicopter.
Chelsea's pursuit of Eto'o is likely to signal an end to their interest in Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who now appears set to stay at Old Trafford.
