West Bromwich Albion will have to move fast if they are to complete the loan signing of Marseille striker Jordan Ayew.
But if they do not sign him then they could switch their attention to team-mate Pierre-Andre Gignac.
Marseille also received a bid from St Etienne on Monday and that could scupper Albion’s plans yet again.
It has been a summer of frustration for Baggies boss Steve Clarke who has failed to persuade former Chelsea forward Saloman Kalou to come to The Hawthorns and seen Nicolas Anelka threaten to quit the game after the death of his agent.
Clarke has lined up Ayew and Morgan Amalfitano to come to Albion on loan.
But St Etienne now want Ayew and that could force Baggies into a rethink.
Albion will not want to see the transfer deadline pass by next Monday without fresh recruits on board.
But St Etienne want Ayew to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he signed for Borussia Dortmund.
In among all this, Ayew says he wants to stay at Marseille - but he is not getting enough game time at the moment.
So a loan move to Albion would suit him.
Albion are short on firepower with Peter Odemwingie now looking as though he will sign for Swansea.
But Clarke is desperate to fill the gap left by Romelu Lukaku who has returned to Chelsea from his season long loan at The Hawthorns.
