Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool's
hopes of qualification for the UEFA
Champions League will depend on the
future of Luis Suarez.
The 33-year-old midfielder does not
want to see the Uruguay international,
who scored 23 times in 33 Premier
League appearances in 2012-13, leave
Anfield - and especially not to a
domestic competitor.
Suarez has indicated he wants a move to away from Merseyside during this close-
season, with Arsenal already having two bids for his services turned down.
But Gerrard has urged his team-mate to snub Arsene Wenger's advances, admitting a
deal with the Emirates Stadium outfit would severely hamper Liverpool's chances of
reaching the Champions League.
"If he goes to Arsenal, it obviously makes our season that little bit more difficult," the
England captain told The Independent.
"It strengthens them an awful lot and they are our rivals for a top-four position.
"From the club's point of view it doesn't make sense at all, no matter how much
money is put on the table.
Gerrard went on to insist that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only players
in world football currently better than Suarez, and admitted that he would not
begrudge the 26-year-old a move to play alongside either of the two La Liga-based
superstars.
"He’s the third best player in the world now. I’d put him alongside (Gareth) Bale.
You’ve got Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who are on a different planet, then
you’ve got Bale and Suarez.
"If he was to go abroad to a Madrid or Barcelona I would totally understand it. He's a
South American. He's good enough to play in either of those teams. From a family
point of view, it’s where they all want to be. Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, some
of the top players I’ve played with - their dream was to play for Real or Barcelona."
