Lambert was left incensed that Branislav Ivanovic was not sent off for an apparent elbow on Christian Benteke and a failure for a penalty to be awarded after John Terry handled in the area during Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Villa over Wednesday.
The angry response prompted Mourinho to draw comparisons between himself and the 44-year-old, while at the same time appearing to criticise the managerial style of the Villa boss.
"Paul has a certain type of personality and behaviour on the pitch," said Mourinho.
"He reminds me of myself 10 years ago when I was complaining about every decision when I want to coach my team and at the same time I want to have a whistle on my lip.
"He is the same. He will change. With time and experience he will change because he complains about every, every, every decision.
"But he is a young manager. Very intelligent. He adapts his style to the quality of his players.
"I wish him well, I like him."
Lambert took Mourinho's comments well, as he responded: "He is a brilliant football manger and he has done it in many countries so it is a nice complement - but Jose doesn't stand there like a shrinking violet."
Victory for Chelsea, sealed by Ivanovic's 73rd-minute header after Benteke had cancelled out an Antonio Luna own goal, made it two wins from two in the Premier League since Mourinho returned to take charge of the club for a second time.
Next up is a trip to Old Trafford on Monday to face champions Manchester United.
