CONGO SAILS THROUGH IN LUBUMBASHI

The Democratic Republic of Congo booked their place at the 2014 African Nations Championship on Friday after holding Cameroon to a 1-1 draw in the return leg of the qualifying playoff in Lubumbashi.
The local Leopards recorded a 2-1 win on aggregate from the two-legged tie to knock off the highly favoured local Indomitable Lions from the competition.
After a 1-0 win on Monday over Cameroon in Garoua, the DR Congo opened the scoring through Patou Ebunga in the 20th minute to keep hopes alive but Tobie Ebah equalised for the visitors in the 70th minute, as the Lions poured forth for the rest of the encounter to snatch a winner.
The scoreboard remained unchanged till the final whistle in favour of the home side who won the maiden edition of the tournament in 2009 in the Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
However, Cameroon complained to Caf prior to Friday’s game that DR Congo players did not report with their passports and licences during the first leg, which made it impossible for officials to prove whether they were home-based players or not.
Caf is yet to respond to the complaint.
