The Borussia Dortmund forward's contract expires at the end of the current season, with manager Jurgen Klopp resigned to losing the forward.
And Lewandowski revealed after Dortmund's DFB-Pokal win over 1860 Munich on Tuesday that he was likely to tie up his move to Pep Guardiola's side in January.
When asked by Sport1 if that was the case, the Poland international said: "Yes, because then I can officially sign the contract."
The former Lech Poznan striker was linked with a switch to the Allianz Arena during the close-season but Dortmund insisted on retaining the striker.
Lewandowski started the clash against 1860 Munich as the top-flight outfit progressed to the third round thanks to extra-time goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
After their first win in three matches in all competitions, Klopp was pleased to progress but would have preferred the goals to have come sooner.
"We must and can win the tough games," Klopp told the club's official website. "We missed some great opportunities and hit the post or crossbar on four occasions. This doesn´t happen too often.
"They defended very deep, which isn't easy for any team. If we had
scored early it might have been different. The way the two goals were
created and scored was great; I only would have liked to see them in
normal time."
