Bayern Munich are planning to step up their interest in David Luiz and are prepared to pay
more than £40million.
Bayern manager Pep Guardiola sees central defence as one of the few areas where he can
improve the European champions and has long been an admirer of Luiz.
Chelsea maintain the 26-year-old Brazilian, who signed a new five-year contract last
September, is not for sale and manager Jose Mourinho tried to quash suggestions that Luiz is
not his type of centre half during an in-depth interview on the team’s tour of Asia. ‘The potential is incredible, amazing,’ said Mourinho, when asked about Luiz. ‘He always has
to play. For me he is a central defender.’
But the rumours refuse to vanish where Luiz is concerned.
Yesterday, the Catalan newspaper Sport reported that Barcelona are ready to move for Luiz,
who joined Chelsea from Benfica for £25m in January 2011.
Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be interested if they lose Thiago Silva to Barcelona.
Several wealthy European clubs are in the market for a stylish centre half; someone who is
quick and confident on the ball and not many players fit the criteria.
