INJURY WORRY FOR CITY

Matija Nastasic fears he will miss the start of the season with an ankle injury, putting
more pressure on Manchester City to sign another centre back.
The Serbia defender, 20, was carried off in City’s Barclays Asia Trophy final win over
Sunderland on Saturday and will have a scan in Manchester on Monday.
However, the early indications are that Nastasic will be out of action for three weeks and will
struggle to be fit for City’s Premier League opener at home to Newcastle on August 19.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini refused to blame the poor state of the pitch in Hong Kong for
Nastasic’s injury, saying that it was caused by a kick on his ankle and not the conditions.
Centre back is the one position that City clearly still need to strengthen.
Although they are in contract talks with Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott, Pellegrini is short
of a defender after releasing Kolo Toure this summer. He has been linked with a £20million
move for Real Madrid’s Pepe, but City sources suggest that their interest is no longer as great
as the Spanish club might believe.
