The Atletico Madrid defender played under manager Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga and only arrived at the Vicente Calderon earlier this summer.
City's Chilean manager, however, is keen to strengthen his central defensive options after injuries to Vincent Kompany and Mateja Nastasic, and the subsequent 3-1 defeat by Cardiff City, exposed a weakness in his squad.
Demichelis signed for Atletico on a free transfer and would be expected to compete with Kompany and Nastasic after their deputies, Javi Garcia and Joleon Lescott, proved inadequate.
The Argentina international is, however, in Atletico's squad to face Barcelona in the Supercopa on Wednesday evening.
