Manuel Pellegrini will have been happy
to his start to life in the Premier League as his Manchester City side
thrashed Newcastle 4-0, but an injury to skipper Vincent Kompany which
could leave the Belgian out for up to two weeks will come as a blow.
Kompany was hauled off on the hour mark after attempting a sliding challenge, with midfielder Javi Garcia forced to come on and fill in at centre half.
The knock leaves City with just one fit central defender at the club in Joleon Lescott, while Pellegrini revealed his thoughts on the injury after the match, saying: 'I will see him tomorrow. The doctor will decide how many days he is out. Maybe for one or two weeks he will be out.'
Matija Nastasic is a long-term casualty after picking up an ankle injury in the club's pre-season tour of Hong Kong, while Micah Richards was left out of the opening clash with Newcastle prior to the match with a hamstring strain.
Kolo Toure, meanwhile, was allowed to leave for Liverpool.
The news could mean City step up their pursuit of Real Madrid defender Pepe, who has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium throughout the summer.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti is reluctant to lose the powerful centre-half but the emergence of Raphael Varane last season has led many at Madrid to believe that Pepe could be allowed to leave should the right offer be put on the table.
