LIVERPOOL MAKE LATE BID FOR OLD WAR HORSE COLE

Liverpool will make a last-ditch attempt to persuade Ashley Cole to join them.

But Cole, who was left out of England’s World Cup squad, is poised to leave the Premier League and move to Serie A.

Roma hope to rubber stamp a deal with the ex-England left-back next week.

NETHERLANDS EDGE OUT COSTA RICA IN THRILLING PENALTY SHOOTOUT

Tim Krul was an unlikely hero as the Netherlands secured a 4-3 shoot-out win over Costa Rica to book a FIFA World Cup semi-final place.

Over 120 goalless minutes in Salvador, Louis van Gaal's team struck the post or crossbar on three occasions and the Manchester United-bound manager unleashed an unexpected secret weapon from the bench during the dying seconds of extra time.

Krul, who has an unremarkable penalty record at Newcastle United, came on for Jasper Cillessen to save Costa Rica's second and last penalties from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana. Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt were the Netherlands' flawless foursome.

It ends a remarkable journey for tournament outsiders Costa Rica, who won a group featuring Uruguay, Italy and England before beating Greece on spot kicks. But this proved a step too far as the Dutch, who had lost four of their previous five shootouts in major tournaments, banished their demons from 12 yards to book a last-four appointment with Argentina

Costa Rica combined the organisation and attacking verve that has been their hallmark in Brazil, but ambition going forward left them exposed to the Netherlands' incision on the break and indebted to inspirational goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Jorge Luis Pinto's team were in confident mood as the game entered its final stages before Sneijder rattled the post from a free-kick to herald a late onslaught. But Van Persie proved uncharacteristically wasteful in spurning three goalscoring opportunities, including one close-range sitter, as the Netherlands failed in their bid to avoid an extra half hour.

Sneijder crashed a shot into the bar, while Costa Rica substitute Michael Urena threatened to snatch the headlines that would ultimately be Krul's

Memphis Depay, starting having twice netted from the bench in this tournament, gave Van Persie the game's first clear opening in the 21st minute but Navas closed the angle well and stopped Sneijder's follow up.

Navas saved well in the 29th minute as Van Persie and Depay reversed their earlier roles, while a frantic Dutch clearance as Johnny Acosta looked to turn home Celso Borges' set-piece knockdown underlined a developing end-to-end feel.

Sneijder took a more direct approach from a 38th-minute free-kick, conceded by Junior Diaz, but Navas - quelling fears surrounding a shoulder injury that dogged him earlier in the week - clawed superbly around the post.

Robben's admission that he dived during the Netherlands' win over Mexico in the previous round dominated the pre-match build-up and Umana followed Diaz into the book after he too fouled the forward, who cleverly set up Sneijder to blaze over from the resulting 53rd-minute set play.

It was Joel Campbell and not his illustrious opponent who went to ground easily in the 60th minute as a promising Diaz raid down the left came to nothing, before Giancarlo Gonzalez headed over from another fine Christian Bolanos delivery to increase Dutch anxiety.

There was contact from Gonzalez and another booking as Robben went to ground theatrically in the 81st minute. Sneijder watched his free-kick from the left-hand corner of the area cannon back off the post.

Van Persie was then denied by Navas and he somehow failed to connect with Sneijder's delicious 88th-minute cross.

The Manchester United man was not done there and - after Navas punched his free-kick away in stoppage time - Costa Rica midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda cleared Van Persie's shot off the goal line via the crossbar, Daley Blind's low centre having caused complete chaos.

The start of extra time brought little let-up and Navas produced further acrobatics to keep out Ron Vlaar's header.

Urena crafted his team's best chance, drawing a nerveless 117th-minute save from Cillessen at the end of a jinking run and penalties arrived after Sneijder rattled the crossbar from distance with Navas rooted to the spot.

When the heat was on from 12 yards shortly afterwards, Krul was anything but.

GAZA BUMPS INTO REDKNAPP IN SOUTHAMPTON

Paul Gascoigne caught QPR manager Harry Redknapp by surprise by landing him with a kiss in the middle of the street when the two bumped into each other in Southampton.

The pair seemed to get on as they laughed, chatted and Gascoigne even puckered up to land a kiss on the QPR boss and then ended their chance meeting this week by swapping numbers and Redknapp inviting Gazza to the clubs’s Harlington training ground.

Same old Gazza....

HUMMELS HEADS GERMANY INTO BRAZIL 2014 SEMI'S

Well, they did it again. It’s four on the trot now – a record. Germany have not missed a World Cup semi-final date this century: 2002, 2006, 2010, now 2014.

It was 1998, in France, when they last failed to be in the competition in the final week, and they will be there again, in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday. And back here, in the Maracana Stadium, one last time a week on Sunday? There is no reason why not.

Germany did not have the best chances, or necessarily play the best football, but they were excellent in possession, decisive and sharp at key defensive moments and found a way to win, as the best teams do. As Germany do, so often, in fact.

That the goal came from Mats Hummels, a bold selection by coach Joachim Low who also abandoned his false nine system and restored Philipp Lahm to full-back, merely adds to the evidence that Germany are World Cup naturals in a way other countries – you know who – are not.

France have a good record of going deep into the competition once beyond the first round, too. but they met their match here.

Germany’s defensive shield was set up too efficiently to let them pass, despite the best efforts of Mathieu Valbuena, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was exceptional, again, on what was his 50th international appearance.

There was a lot of French pressure in the second-half, but the best chance still fell to Germany. When Mesut Ozil broke down the left flank, his cross sat perfectly for Thomas Muller, who should have claimed Germany’s second and took the last remaining tension from the game. Instead, he missed his kick and the ball fell to substitute Andre Schurrle who could not continue his run of five goals in consecutive internationals. Hugo Lloris saved with his feet.

This was far from the most impressive German performance of this World Cup. Yet that, in its way, makes it all the more impressive.

This is a team that cuts a path through, even in adversity; that came to Rio de Janeiro with seven players suffering a viral illness, yet didn’t even pack its big suitcases for the journey home, because it had no intention of departing early. Confident? Arrogant? Check the record. They have every reason to be both. There have been 13 World Cups since 1966 and Germany have made the last four in ten of them. England, the other finalists that year: one.

It was an outcome that vindicated Low in so many ways. His changes worked, most particularly the reintroduction of Hummels for Per Mertesacker. Low worked out that France’s greatest threat came with pace and the ball over the top and that Mertesacker would be ill-equipped to deal with this. He was right. In addition, Hummels scored the only goal of the game and made a vital block. Tactically, it was a full house.

NASRI PARTIES IN HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN

Samir Nasri’s girlfriend leapt to the Manchester City player’s defence as he faced a social media backlash after posting a picture of a crude salute from inside a nightclub.

Despite inspiring Manuel Pellegrini’s side to Premier League glory last season, the 27-year-old was incredibly overlooked by France boss Didier Deschamps for the World Cup in Brazil.

And as his compatriots prepare for their crunch quarter-final clash against Germany on Friday afternoon, Nasri began the day courting controversy with his Instagram snap that showed him displaying a crude one-figure gesture with an accompanying message: 'Tell a hater I say... Fk you, Fk you, F**k you!!!

Nasri’s crass words are believed to be taken from song lyrics, but his model girlfriend Anara Atanes was forced to defend him as he came under fire from fans, who appeared more concerned about where the picture was taken, rather than the offensive salute itself.

The Muslim midfielder was slammed for posting a picture of himself at a nightclub during the holy month of Ramadan.

The picture is understood to be taken from Nasri’s holiday in Las Vegas earlier this summer and there was no suggestion that the player was involved in anything untoward his religious beliefs.

But Brighton-born model Atanes was quick to defend her man from any criticism as she posted: ‘Yes hes [sic] fasting! Even on his holiday!’

CAPELLO SUMMONED BEFORE RUSSIAN PARLIAMENT

Russia manager Fabio Capello will be forced to appear before parliament to explain the country's dismal showing at the World Cup in Brazil.

The head of the State Duma's Sports Committee, Igor Anansikh, says he will demand Capello explain to lawmakers how he intends to improve the Russian side and make them more competitive.

Under Capello, Russia failed to win a game in Brazil - drawing 1-1 with both Algeria and South Korea, as well as losing 1-0 to Belgium - and finished third, leading to a group stage exit.

Capello signed a new £7million-a-year contract extension in January which ties him to the Russian Football Union (FUR) until 2018 - when the country will host the World Cup for the first time.

The FUR expect the team to be competitive by the time the country hosts football's biggest tournament in four years' time and parliament will seek assurances over how the Italian intends to turn their fortunes around.

But if the FUR were to terminate Capello's contract then they could be forced to pay the Italian £15m in compensation.

Amazingly, before his contract renegotiation Capello would only have been due £3m if he had been sacked, according to ITAR-Tass.

And when he was in charge of England, Capello was paid an estimated £6m-a-year.

Since January 2008 when he accepted the Three Lions job, Capello has been paid close to £26m and has delivered just a solitary win over two World Cup campaigns.

LALANA UNVEILED AT ANFIELD!!!

When Adam Lallana put pen to paper at Liverpool on Monday, he joined a long list of Everton fans to have signed for the club's fierce local rivals.

The midfielder will wear red instead of blue on his next visit to Goodison Park as he bids to claim victory against the team he grew up supporting as a boy.

But Lallana isn't the only Evertonian to have plied his trade at Anfield. Here Sportsmail takes a look at how six other stars got on after crossing the Stanley Park divide.

ADAM LALLANA

Born in St Albans but choosing to support Everton like his father, Lallana used to go along to Goodison Park with his Dad and watched the likes of Duncan Ferguson and Neville Southall star for the Toffees as the club won the FA Cup in 1995.

However, the England international admits the club's glory days were in the past when he became a fan.

'Dad used to reminisce about the good old days when Everton won the old first division championship and the FA Cup back in the 1970s and 80s but they weren’t quite so good when I started supporting them,' he said.

The former Blue will be hoping for a Liverpool win when his boyhood club visit Anfield in September.

SANCHEZ SNUBS LIVERPOOL SWITCH

Alexis Sanchez is ready to throw a spanner in the works of Barcelona's attempts to sign Luis Suarez by refusing to join Liverpool.

Barca are keen to use the Chile international as a makeweight in their pursuit of Suarez - but Sanchez is understood to prefer a move to rivals Arsenal.

And Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is set to grant the South American his wish by launching a move for the attacking midfielder.

Barca officials have arrived in London to start formal talks with Liverpool over their interest in Suarez.

Liverpool, who are interested in Sanchez, want £80million for Suarez this summer.

The Catalan club are prepared to use Sanchez, who is valued at £30m, as a sweetener in their offer for Suarez.

But Sanchez looks likely to snub a move to Anfield, with his heart set on a switch to the Emirates Stadium.

That means only a straight cash deal for Suarez is likely to be enough to persuade Liverpool to sees their prolific striker.

Sources close to Sanchez have indicated that the 25-year-old would prefer a move to London, leaving Arsenal in pole position to land the talented forward.

Barca chiefs yesterday ramped up their interest in Suarez by making the astonishing move of praising the Liverpool striker following his biting controversy.

BARCA LAUNCH £72 MILLION BID FOR SUAREZ

Liverpool and Barcelona will hold further talks over the sale of Luis Suarez this week after the Spanish club made an opening offer understood to be around £72million.

The outline bid is still short of Liverpool's £80m valuation but shows an acceptance of the 27-year-old's worth.

Wednesday's meeting in London was productive and cordial with sensible expectations placed on both sides.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre met with Barcelona power brokers Raúl Sanllehí, Toni Rossich and Jordi Mestre.

Although nothing was finalised there is an expectation that an agreement can be met to grant Suarez his wish to move to Barcelona.

Liverpool maintain an interest in Alexis Sanchez and he could yet be included as a makeweight with Liverpool having already valued him at around £30m.

The Chile international has given no indication he wants to move to Anfield and Suarez’s transfer is unlikely to be concluded until the 25-year-old has decided whether to join Liverpool, Arsenal, another European club or stay at the Nou Camp.
